Stubbs was a well-known painter who, like Josiah, experimented with new techniques. Inspired by the vibrancy and permanence of enamel paintings on copper, Stubbs wanted to make larger versions. Josiah supplied Stubbs with earthenware plaques to paint on, with Stubbs designing  for Wedgwood in return. \r\n\r\nProducing large and identically-sized ceramic tablets  was a difficult undertaking and Josiah conducted experiments over several years, even building special  kilns to fire the plaques in. Josiah wrote to his business partner, Thomas Bentley, in 1779: ‘When you see Mr Stubbs pray tell him how hard I have  been labouring to furnish him with the means of adding immortality to his excellent pencil’.
