Trained in law, she started making jewellery as a hobby, working with local artisans in Nairobi to transform her line drawings into three-dimensional metal pieces. Line drawing is still an essential part of her creative practice, and its echoes are visible in her finished pieces: ‘It’s from these lines that I started making pieces that imitated the drawings. After some time, I wasn’t happy with just line drawings. I wanted a medium that would give tangibility to my lines.’  \r\n\r\nKyalo’s work sits within a wider movement in West and East African jewellery design, where creatives, drawing on pre-colonial design practices, are pushing the boundaries of what jewellery can be.  Beyond the expected shapes of earrings and necklaces, Kyalo’s pieces follow the contours of the body. Reflecting on her use of unusual or new forms, Kyalo notes ‘Most artists tend to make designs that people are familiar with…It need not be this way.’\r\n\r\nThe piece comes from Kyalo’s DUARA NA MVIRINGO project, which is a study of circles and spheres (the literal translation of this Swahili phrase ). It is made in silver-plated brass and the design is called Kinga Pua (‘nose protector’).","physicalDescription":"Silver-plated brass wire, shaped to fit the curve of cheekbones and the nose.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Theresia Kyalo","id":"AUTH383526"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"brass","id":"AAT10946"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver-plated brass","categories":[{"text":"Africa","id":"THES49019"},{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2023NK7752","2022NF1666"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SHLN","id":"THES49063"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"AAT209286"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Kenya","id":"x35155"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2020","earliest":"2020-01-01","latest":"2020-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Jewellery, 'Kinga Pua', silver-plated brass, by Theresia Kyalo, Kenya, 2020","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.118-2022"],"accessionNumberNum":"118","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":2022,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-01-29","recordCreationDate":"2021-10-29","availableToBook":false}}
