Despite the relatively short time Ravilious worked for Wedgwood - owing to his tragic death during active service in 1942 - his designs remained a staple of modern Queen's Ware production well into the post-war period.\n\nDesigned in 1938 but manufactured from 1953, the 'Travel' service features trains, boats, and hot air balloons on the distinctive Windsor Grey colourway on Queen's Ware. The design combines a nostalgic vision of the British landscape and transportation, which chimed with the post-war optimism of the 'Britain Can Make It' exhibition.","physicalDescription":"Side plate, grey coloured earthenware, glazed, centre with transfer printed design of a winter wilderness, embellished with blue enamel, edge with continual black curved patterns in a descending size, separated with blue enamel semi circles.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Ravilious, Eric","id":"A878"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"Manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"},{"text":"","id":""}],"techniques":[{"text":"transfer printing","id":"AAT53922"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"},{"text":"","id":""}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, glazed, with lithographic decoration and hand-painting","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2024NW1959","2024NW1960","2022ND6998","2022ND7000"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"009","id":"THES411781"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Plate","id":"AAT11041"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Barlaston","id":"x31989"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1954","earliest":"1954-01-01","latest":"1954-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Philip Angus in 2022.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"175","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'TRAVEL' / (black underscore) / 'DESIGNED BY / RAVILIOUS / (black underscore) / 'WEDGWOOD / OF ETRURIA / & BARLASTON / MADE IN / ENGLAND'  (printed in black on reverse), 'TK472' (marked in red on reverse), 'WEDGWOOD / 2D54' (impressed on reverse)","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Gifted by Philip Angus in 2022","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Side plate, ‘Travel’, earthenware, designed by Eric Ravilious for Josiah Wedgwood and Sons, Barlaston, 1954","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null}}],"partNumbers":["WE.9-2021"],"accessionNumberNum":"9","accessionNumberPrefix":"WE","accessionYear":2021,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-11-14","recordCreationDate":"2021-10-22","availableToBook":false}}
