Her flowing hair is covered by a short veil the ends of which rest on her shoulders. She wears a cloak which is fastened at the throat over a loose robe caught up by a girdle at the waist. The cloak falls in heavy folds across her knees. The child is represented with his head turned back against the Virgin's breast and both hands on the Virgin's right wrist. His left leg is supported by her right hand and his right foot rests on her right thigh with the sole upturned.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"di Bartolo, Nanni","id":"A30240"},"association":{"text":"possibly","id":"THES285217"},"note":"possibly Nanni di Bartolo"},{"name":{"text":"Florentine","id":"AUTH394726"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"terracotta","id":"AAT10669"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Terracotta","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[{"text":"Florentine","id":"THES392442"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2022NF4108","2022NF4109","2022NF4110","2022NF4111","2022NF4112","2022NF4113","2018KY5218","2018KY5217","2018KY5162"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"D","id":"THES385237"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"D","id":"THES397248"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statue","id":""}],[{"text":"Statue","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1420-1430","earliest":"1415-01-01","latest":"1430-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"98.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"99.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"7/4/17","earliest":"2017-04-07","latest":"2017-04-07"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"66","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"7/4/17","earliest":"2017-04-07","latest":"2017-04-07"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"35","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"7/4/17","earliest":"2017-04-07","latest":"2017-04-07"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"The sculpture is close in style to a number of terracottas produced in Florence in the early fifteenth century, including the 'Seated Virgin and Child' related to the workshop of Lorenzo Ghiberti.
