This statuette could have an allegorical meaning, either acting as a memento mori, and/or as a depiction of the Christ Child. It is at the same time reminiscent of secular subjects, such as Venus reclining on a couch. Its style suggests it is South Netherlandish, rather than Italian, although it was called Italian on acquisition.","physicalDescription":"The open-mouthed, semi-recumbent, curly-haired child is lying on a sheet on a bed, with a tasselled cushion under his (the child is probably male)  left arm. He clutches the sheet with his left hand, and raises his right hand with a gesture reminiscent of blessing. His tongue and teeth can be seen in his open mouth.
