In 1969 he launched his own designs using original 1940s materials and lasts, making snakeskin platform, block heel and wedge shoes that were sold by a friend at Kensington Market. Opening his own shop, Cobblers to the World, on the King’s Road in 1972, as the glam rock era took hold, de Havilland provided appropriately flamboyant footwear for celebrities such as David Bowie and Bianca Jagger. His shoes were the perfect accessories for the 1930s and 1940s silhouettes of early 1970s fashion, and help to complete the look worn by Danuta Laughton, who donated these sandals to the V&A together with her collection of Biba and Bus Stop styles.\r\n\r\nAlthough Terry de Havilland's shop did not trade beyond the 1980s, he remained trusted shoemaker to performers including Cher, Madonna, Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse.
