The garment is dyed pink at the shoulders shading into deep crimson at the hem.  It is embroidered with butterflies in shades of pink and touches of black, with three on the upper back being markedly larger than the rest.. At the shoulders are five crests (mon) two on the front, three on the back, embroidered in pink and black with a design roughly akin to the wild ginger mon of the Tokugawa shogunate. The kimono is lined with pinky-red silk and there is a hanging hook of silk at the base of the neck. The garment has a slightly padded hem. It has a matching sash of the same fabric -paler pink in the middle and crimson red at the ends - with a butterfly embroidered at each end. The ensemble was made in Japan specifically for export to the west to satisfy the European and American 'craze' for wearing kimono. Unlike a kimono for the domestic market, it does not have a central seam at the back.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidery","id":"x40351"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk and embroidery","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2023NR4087","2023NR4089","2023NR4088"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES404715"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES404715"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Kimono","id":"AAT46171"}],[{"text":"Kimono","id":"AAT46171"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1905-1915","earliest":"1905-01-01","latest":"1915-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mick Jagger ","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"135","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Kimono, base of neck to hem","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"131","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Kimono, width across shoulders from sleeve end to sleeve end","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"166","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Sash","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"15","unit":"cm","qualifier":"maximum width","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Sash","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This export kimono was part of the reference collection of fashion designer L'Wren Scott.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Kimono with sash, pink and red figured silk, embroidered with crests (mon) and butterlies, Japan, made for the Western market, 1905-15","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["FE.687:1-2022","FE.687:2-2022"],"accessionNumberNum":"687","accessionNumberPrefix":"FE","accessionYear":2022,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2021-10-06","availableToBook":false}}
