It is unusual, however, for export kimono to have such a padded hem and the embroidery is of a quality normally associated with domestic garments. The kimono belonged to the fashion designer L'Wren Scott and provided inspiration for her 2013 red-carpet ensemble, 'Tagasode', which is also in the V&A collection (T.96-2022).","physicalDescription":"Outer-kimono (uchikake) with long swinging sleeves (furisode) of ivory ribbed silk embroidered with silk threads, padded in places. The bold design is of wisteria, in shades of mauve and green, which cascades down the front and back of the upper body, with smaller scale wisteria on either side of the collar. The lower body is decorated with chrysanthemums in shades of orange (back only), pink, yellow and white, with leaves in shades of green. Butterflies in shades of grey and blue with brown, pink, orange and yellow highlights, fly between the two floral groups, some alighting on the chrysanthemums. The long stitches are of floss (untwisted) silk, while lightly twisted silk is used for the plant stalks, veins of the leaves, and elements of the insects. Knot stitches for the denser, central disc florets of the chrysanthemums. The ivory fabric extends into the lower lining, the lower overlaps being also embroidered with smaller, pink chrysanthemums and butterflies. The rest of the lining is of fine, plain weave red silk. The hem of the garment is heavily padded.
