Although unsigned, it includes a line drawing of a fox, an image which often appears on Avery's drawings.\n\nClaire Avery was an American artist-illustrator, painter and teacher who befriended Adeline Genée when she visited the USA. Avery made drawings of the ballerina in performance and off stage. These were her 'breakthrough' as an artist. In 1909 she held an exhibition at the Scuola Gallery (22-28 March). The <i>New York Times</i> review noted that the images of the ballerina ‘emphasised Miss Avery’s remarkable gift for the interpretation of swift motion.
