The two figures are carved in the round on a rough integral base. St John the Baptist stands on a higher mound on Christ's left, holding up a shell in his right hand with which he baptises Christ, who stands with his arms crossed on his breast. The style of the present piece, in particular the elongation of the figure of the Baptist, reminiscent of the work of El Greco, and the frontal, almost awkward, nature of the composition, as well as the surface treatment of the ivory, suggest that it is in fact Spanish. St John the Baptist stands on a higher mound on Christ's left, holding up a shell in his right hand with which he baptises Christ, who stands with his arms crossed on his breast. The surface of the ivory has been pricked in a distinctive way to represent the fur edging of the goatskin worn by the Baptist, and the rock on which he stands, as well as the running water of the river. Both figures have open mouths and similar facial features.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"carved ivory","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2011FB2650","2011FB2660","2011FB2662","2011FB2663","2017KB2100"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES395346"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statuette","id":""}],[{"text":"Figure group","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Spain","id":"x29170"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1600 - ca.1630","earliest":"1595-01-01","latest":"1634-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"27.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"10","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought for £35 in 1872 from the Webb Collection.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Figure group, ivory, representing the Baptism of Christ, Spanish, ca. 1600-30","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<font -u>List of Objects in the Art Division, South Kensington, Acquired During the Year 1872, Arranged According to the Dates of Acquisition.</font> London: Printed by George E.
