They fought against the Portuguese colonialists during the Angolan War of Independence from 1961 to 1974 and have ruled the country since independence in 1975. Before the end of the Cold War, they identified with a Marxist-Leninist ideology but after the dismantling of the Communist bloc declared themselves a social democracy. An Amnesty International report of 1996 gave the overview that since the war began in 1961 Angola has never enjoyed peace. After independence in November 1975, fighting broke out between the MPLA and other rival parties and groups, and all have been accused of human rights abuses.","physicalDescription":"Poster depicting a three-quarter length photographic portrait of an Angolan soldier holding a large heavy gun.
