A student at the Royal College of Art in the early 1980s, Bell drew inspiration from the V&A's collections when starting her eponymous design company in 1984. These designs complement other designs for textiles by Cressida Bell in the V&A’s collection (E.1484 to 1488-2000).\r\n\tBell draws from a wide range of influences in her work; Turkish textiles are a strong inspiration, as are global ceramics, though one can also see influences from kente cloth, Indian textile patterns and 1940s British patterned dress fabrics in her designs. Bell is a longstanding and successful designer of textiles, lampshades, greetings cards and stationery, known for her skilful and colourful patterns which hark back to early 20th century British design. Considered together these works represent an overview of the designer's output from c.1987 to 2017, providing an insight into the development of her style and colour palette over a thirty-year period. \r\n\tThe designs are working material, comprising an in-between stage after her initial sketchbook ideas. The to- scale emulsion painted sheets are created as a guide in order to make the screenprint screens for each colouring the finished pattern. Each of the pattern repeats need to match at each edge, so repeating patterns are cut up and collaged to effect this. These designs are therefore helpful examples to demonstrate the design process. Bell’s colour schemes are bold and distinctive, often including black to help the pattern stand out.\r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bell, Cressida","id":"A34882"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Emulsion paint and crayon on paper","categories":[{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2021NB9412"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"D","shelf":"198","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"design","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Cressida Bell","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Textile design by Cressida Bell, 'Hearts & Clubs'.
