He was a member of the De Stijl movement and was influenced greatly by its geometric designs and bold primary colours. This high-chair is designed in the De Stijl style using Rietveld's recognisable bright red painted wood in a geometric form. It was made in the 1960s by one of Rietveld's assistants, Gereard van de Groenekan, who took over his furniture workshop in 1924.\r\n\r\nThis chair illustrates how design became important in childhood objects. It moves away from the practical nature of a high-chair and instead shows how designers interwove art movements into their design to create a commonly used object, allowing design to meet function in a childhood object.","physicalDescription":"High-chair made from straight, overlapping lengths of wood, painted red with cream ends, with a brown leather seat and back.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Rietveld, Gerrit Thomas","id":"A5680"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Groenekan, Gerard A. van der","id":"A5681"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"leather","id":"AAT11845"},{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Painted wood with leather","categories":[{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[{"text":"De Stijl","id":"AAT21259"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2009CR7306"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CA002","id":"THES388272"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"high chair","id":"AAT38184"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Netherlands","id":"x29020"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1920","earliest":"1920-01-01","latest":"1920-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1960s","earliest":"1960-01-01","latest":"1969-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"91","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"47","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"41","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"3.65","unit":"kg","qualifier":"nifill","date":{"text":"13/04/2022","earliest":"2022-04-13","latest":"2022-04-13"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Object purchased from Christies South Kensington","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Child's high-chair, designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1920, made in the 1960s.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Unlimited edition","id":"THES48868"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"<b>Squares for chairs </b>\n\r\nGerrit Rietveld didn’t like objects looking too busy or complicated.
