Such a gesture probably intended to improve diplomatic relations between Saxony and the French Court.\n\r\nMade of Meissen porcelain, this teapot was later mounted by a leading Parisian goldsmith, Eloy Brichard. It prominently carries the arms of France and Poland and is decorated with harbour scenes, like all the surviving pieces of the service. \n\nIts prestigious provenance appealed to Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde, who formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Sir Arthur donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Porcelain teapot and cover made by the Meissen porcelain factory in silver-gilt mounts. Royal armorial teapot and cover with the Arms of France and Poland, painted in the manner of B.G. Hauer: with a continuous harbour scene; merchants camping on quaysides among barrels and packages; figures unloading a galleon before distant buildings; and shipping. Each side of the body has the crowned arms. Wishbone handle with shell thumbpiece and bird's head spout are silver-gilt, the cover similarly decorated with pine-cone finial (restoration to tip of spout, very minor rubbing to gilding).","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Brichard, Eloy","id":"A22338"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Meissen porcelain factory","id":"A9173"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"},{"text":"silver","id":"x37998"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"},{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain and engraved silver-gilt","categories":[{"text":"Tea, coffee and chocolate wares","id":"THES48886"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2012FG3540","2012FG7876","2012FG3538","2012FG7861","2012FG3539","2012FG7863","2012FG7879","2012FG7881","2012FJ2481","2012FJ2482","2012FJ2483"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"70B","id":"THES413996"},"free":"","case":"CA004","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"teapot","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Meissen","id":"x35076"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1756-62","earliest":"1756-01-01","latest":"1762-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1737","earliest":"1737-01-01","latest":"1737-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"11","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"18.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"11.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 30/04/24 IW ","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"blue crossed swords: Dreher's 00, circa 1737","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"for the Meissen porcelain factory"},{"content":"decharge of Eloy Brichard, 1756-62","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"on the silver-gilt mounts"}],"objectHistory":"From the service presented by Augustus III, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony to Maria Leszczyńska, Queen of France possibly in 1737.
