Its form generally followed that of teapots, with the exception of the position of the handle. By about 1725 the tripod stand enclosing a lamp had become a standard feature. The ensemble was sometimes completed with a salver. Nearly 40 kettles by de Lamerie are recorded, spanning the period from 1713 to 1751.\n\nThe arms are those of Lequesne impaling Knight are for Sir John Lequesne (d. 1741) and Mary Knight; they were married by the Bishop of Norwich on 1 May 1738 at St. Peter le Poer, City of London. Mary Knight is said to have had a dowry of £20,000 (J. Bertrand Payne, An Armorial of Jersey, 1859, p. 250). Sir John Lequesne, a Huguenot merchant who was knighted by George II in 1738, was an alderman of the City of London, Master of the Grocers’ Company of London, 1736-37 and a Director of the Bank of England from 1738 until his death. A wealthy merchant, he seems to have accrued his fortune as an importer of sugar and tobacco. In 1724 he and his brother, David Lequesne (d. 1753) were among several London traders who responded to an enquiry from The Lords Commissioners of Trade and Plantations relating to duties on those commodities. This is significant because included in the decoration of this silver tea kettle and lampstand and his celebrated de Lamerie coffee pot (London, 1738, offered at Christie’s, London, 4 July 2013, lot 48) are the leaves of sugar cane and tobacco sprays and plants. It is suggested that a salver was ordered by Lady Lequesne to compliment the other de Lamerie pieces in her possession, possibly as a stand for the above-mentioned coffee pot of 1738 ( see Sotheby's 4 May 2017 lot 30. Information kindly provided by Alice Minter 31/03/17). \r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Kettle is a compressed spherical form with a rim foot. Two large cartouches with scrolls, shells and laurel leaves with the bust of a putto above are applied to the body. Each cartouche is engraved with a coat of arms, those of Lesquesne impaling Knight. The upper part of the body is flat-chased ith scrolls, shells and trelliswork. Shells are chased on the flush cover, which has an ovory finial. The handle is affixed to applied scrolls and is covered in wicker.\r\n\r\nThe stand with gadroon-and-scalework border rests on three paw-, scroll-and-foliage feet, with flower-, scroll-and-mask swags between. It holds a plain, circular lamp and cover.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Lamerie, Paul de","id":"A8591"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"Paul de Lamerie (1688-1751) was the greatest silversmith working in England in the 18th century. A Huguenot ( French Protestant), he came to London with his parents, fleeing persecution in France. His success lay in his own exceptional creativity in producing stunning objects, but also in his ability as a businessman, retailing some astonishingly spectacular silver using the most effective and innovative suppliers in the trade.\r\n\r\nThe silver shown here is associated with de Lamerie’s most brilliant craftsman, whose identity is still a mystery, who worked from 1737 to 1745.
