He belonged to the same generation as Desiderio da Settignano and Mino da Fiesole. His work also shows parallels to those two sculptors, more than to his brother's work, from whom he received his formal training.","physicalDescription":"The Virgin, seen in half length facing to the right, is seated on a chair; the Child sits on a cushion on her knees holding a bird in his clasped hands. In the background are two flaming candelabra and a garland. From the candelabra hang strings of beads. The arm of the seat appears in the bottom left hand corner.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Rossellino, Antonio","id":"A1970"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"after"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"terracotta","id":"AAT10669"}],"techniques":[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT53622"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Relief in terracotta","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2024NY5507","2024NY5508","2024NY5503","2024NY5538","2024NY5539","2024NY5537","2024NY5556","2024NY5546","2024NY5545","2024NY5544","2024NY5543","2024NY5542","2024NY5541","2024NY5540","2024NY5536","2024NY5522","2024NY5510","2024NY5509","2015HX3268","2017JY0210","2018KY8788"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES396076"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Relief virgin and child","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"Unknown","earliest":null,"latest":null},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"early 15th century","earliest":"1400-01-01","latest":"1450-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"72.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"48.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"The composition seems to have enjoyed unusual popularity in the fifteenth century, and is recorded in versions in terracotta in the Museo Nazionale, Florence, and at San Jacopo alla Cavallina, in cartapesta in Venice (Museo Correr), and in stucco in Berlin (Kaiser Friedrich Museum), Reggia Emilia (Contrada dell'Asineria), Paris (Musée Jacquemart André, two versions; Louvre), New York, Rome, Lyon and elsewhere.","briefDescription":"Panel relief in terracotta, the Virgin and Child, after Antonio Rossellino, Florence, Italy, first half of 15th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Inventory of Art Objects Acquired in the Year 1861 <u>In</u>: <u>Inventory of the Objects in the Art Division of the Museum at South Kensington, Arranged According to the Dates of their Acquisition.
