Gregory Brown for William Foxton in 1922. Abstract patterns, like this one of undulating arches, were among the most contemporary designs displayed in the Paris Exhibition of decorative arts of 1925. This textile was awarded a gold medal by the judges.\r\n\r\nThe firm of William Foxton Ltd., founded in 1903, produced some of the most innovative artist-designed textiles of the 1920. It commissioned artists such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Claude Lovat Fraser, F. Gregory Brown and Constance Irving. In 1915 William Foxton helped to found the Design and Industries Association. The aim was to improve the standard of British industrial design by exhibiting new designs and communicating information about them to those working in the field.","physicalDescription":"Black, grey and cream angular waves create this pattern of undulating arches.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Brown, Gregory","id":"A2046"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Foxton, William","id":"A2548"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"AAT25230"},"note":"probably"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Linen","id":"x29412"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Printing","id":"AAT53319"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Linen","categories":[{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"}],"styles":[{"text":"Art Deco","id":"AAT21426"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AX7282","2006AU3385","2013GD0368"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"013","id":"THES328786"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Furnishing fabric","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1922","earliest":"1922-01-01","latest":"1922-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"CIRC.632-1956","id":"O266803"},"association":"Duplicate"}],"creditLine":"Given by the British Institute of Industrial Arts","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"45.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"41","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"24.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"98","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Printed unbleached linen, Gregory Brown for Foxton, British, 1922\r\n","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Samuels, Charlotte. <font -u>Art Deco Textiles.</font> London : V&A Publications, 2003.
