He holds a damaged trident in his right hand and can be identified as the Hindu god Shiva. A crack encircles the torso, and two tangs on the reverse suggest the figure was originally set within a detachable surround. Cast in a copper alloy with a dark patina, the sculpture was likely made in Ayutthaya, Thailand, around the 15th century.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"copper alloy, cast","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Hinduism","id":"THES48941"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2008BW4929","2008BW4930","2017JW1139"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"47A (VA)","id":"THES49797"},"free":"","case":"1","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Figure","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Thailand","id":"x30017"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Ayutthaya","id":"x46959"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"circa 15th century","earliest":"1395-01-01","latest":"1504-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"30","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"12","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Given by Lt. Cl. Maurice McClean Bidder in 1934. Bidder was appointed as a superintendent of the Royal Survey Department of Siam in 1902 and worked there until at least 1906. He lent a collection of Thai objects, including weapons, musical instruments, metalwork (including figurative sculpture) and textiles, to the V&A from 1905 to 1910. This object, which was reported to have been found at Nakhon Pathom in central Thailand, was part of that loan collection and was later donated by Bidder to the V&A. The style of the image is similar to the Sukhothai style, suggesting that it may have been made in the 14th/15th century, and Alexander Griswold suggested in 1954 that it is an image of Shiva. See V&A file RP 1934/3571.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sculpture of the god Shiva, cast copper alloy, Thailand, about 15th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Reginald Le May. 1938. <i>A Concise History of Buddhist Art in Siam. </i>Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, figure. 204.
