He perfected the technique called zellenmosaik (or cell mosaic, hardstone mosaics set in gold) for boxes and other luxury objects. His celebrated creations proudly display native stones and were used as diplomatic demonstrations of Saxon wealth. \r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.\r\n","physicalDescription":"A gold rectangular notebook, each side with hardstone lozenges set within goldwork (zellenmosaik), later added with two oval, gold framed miniatures: Marie-Antoinette on one side, Louis XVI on the other, both circa 1780. It closes with a gold pencil placed through loops to the right-hand side, the inside has a later red silk lining and contains a later red silk paper notebook.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Neuber, Johann Christian","id":"A14927"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"attributed"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"hardstone","id":"x37572"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT147678"},{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"},{"text":"rock crystal","id":"AAT11152"},{"text":"agate","id":"AAT11135"},{"text":"jasper","id":"AAT11151"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"enamelling","id":"x36974"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Agates, some reverse painted, carnelian, aventurine quartz, chased and reeded gold, miniature on ivory, silk and paper","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BU1856","2008BW3884","2008BU1865","2008BU1850","2008BU1849","2008BU1859","2008BU1858","2008BU1857","2008BU1847","2008BU1866","2008BW3883","2008BW3887","2022NG9538"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES402530"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"70","id":"THES49725"},"free":"","case":"CA002","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"70","id":"THES49725"},"free":"","case":"CA002","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"book","id":""}],[{"text":"pencil","id":""}],[{"text":"notebook cover","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Dresden","id":"x28810"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1780-1785","earliest":"1780-01-01","latest":"1785-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"11.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"8.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"118","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"16/9/22","earliest":"2022-09-16","latest":"2022-09-16"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"85","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"16/9/22","earliest":"2022-09-16","latest":"2022-09-16"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"15","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"16/9/22","earliest":"2022-09-16","latest":"2022-09-16"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"200","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"16/9/22","earliest":"2022-09-16","latest":"2022-09-16"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 25/04/24 IW ","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Dutch tax mark, after 1831","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On mounts"}],"objectHistory":"An astute businessman, Neuber employed a few techniques to enhance the materials he used, so that none of his creations were identical.
