These buttons are carved with amorini and shepherdesses, with landscape accessories set against a red tinsel background. \nThe two leading cities for ivory carving were Paris and Dieppe. Luxury items, such as combs were often made in Paris, especially during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. During the seventeenth century Dieppe became increasingly significant for small-scale sculpture in ivory, perhaps because it was a port.","physicalDescription":"Set of six carved ivory buttons each depicting an amorini or shepherdess in a landscape, on a red tinsel background on metal buttons with glass covers.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"},{"text":"gilt metal","id":"x35080"},{"text":"foil","id":"AAT160106"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"mounting","id":"AAT81370"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved ivory on red tinsel, mounted in glass and gilt metal","categories":[{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2012FG4047"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"030","id":"THES395650"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"030","id":"THES395650"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"030","id":"THES395650"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"030","id":"THES395650"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"030","id":"THES395650"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"030","id":"THES395650"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Button","id":""}],[{"text":"Button","id":""}],[{"text":"Button","id":""}],[{"text":"Button","id":""}],[{"text":"Button","id":""}],[{"text":"Button","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Dieppe","id":"x34927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1780 - ca. 1800","earliest":"1775-01-01","latest":"1804-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"3.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought for £3 in 1870 (vendor unrecorded).","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Set of six buttons, carved ivory on tinsel with glass and metal mounts, depicting amorini and shepherdesses in landscapes, French (Dieppe), ca. 1780-1800","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<font -u>List of Objects in the Art Division, South Kensington, Acquired During the Year 1870, Arranged According to the Dates of Acquisition.</font> London : Printed by George E.
