The abbreviation comes from the group's name in Spanish: 'Organización de Solidaridad de los Pueblos de Asia, África y América Latina'. OSPAAAL was an international non-governmental organisation founded in 1966, which sought to hold dialogue with and reach activists across the globe. OSPAAAL was most active during the 1960s to the 1980s, and quickly became a hub for revolutionary ideas across the Globe. \r\nThe poster makes reference to the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) flag, a party formed in 1961. The figure likely depicts Joshua Nkomo, the founder ZAPU, and it’s predecessor the National Democratic Party (NDP), both banned by the government at the time. Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) was relaunched by Nkomo’s son, Sibangilizwe Michael Nkomo.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Mederos, Rene","id":"A13221"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"OSPAAAL (the Organization in Solidarity with the People of Africa, Asia and Latin America)","id":"A13223"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph poster","categories":[{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"},{"text":"Africa","id":"THES49019"},{"text":"Global Africa","id":"THES413895"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2022NC8367"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"Y","shelf":"87","box":"B"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":"AAT27221"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Cuba","id":"x30039"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Martin Bailey","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The V&A holds a significant group of approximately 200 OSPAAAL posters.
