It is bound to either side by a formalised clump of trees.  To the right a guard wearing half-armour over a tunic drags Christ forward by a rope, holding up three nails in his left hand. Christ, wearing a crown of thorns, advances with lowered head, clasping the cross, which is supported behind by the Virgin.  Between the two is St John holding a lopped stump.
