An important innovation was the introduction of a brilliant translucent green enamel to the existing colour palette made of yellow, red, green, aubergine and underglaze blue. This new combination of colours was called ying cai ('strong colours') in China, and named 'famille verte' ('green family') by European collectors in the mid 19th century. \r\n\r\nThis lantern is painted in 'famille verte' style with scenes taken from the popular novel Xi xiang ji (Romance of the Western Chamber), a romance written by Wang Shifu during the Yuan dynasty (1279-1366).","physicalDescription":"Porcelain lantern painted with polychrome enamels of the famille verte colour scheme and gilding with four scenes and decorative bands of ruyi, plum blossoms and geometric motifs.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain decorated with polychrome enamels","categories":[{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"},{"text":"Famille verte","id":"x44555"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2008BT8751"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"21","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"lantern","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Jingdezhen","id":"x32230"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1700-1722","earliest":"1700-01-01","latest":"1722-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"23","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"overglazing","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"16.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by Mr. George Salting, accessioned in 1910.
