Founded in 1913 by Roger Fry, Omega Workshops was a group of artists (including Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant) who designed furniture, pottery, carpets, textiles, stained glass and whole schemes of interior decoration. The Omega textile designs were ahead of their time and set a fashion for abstract and geometric patterns. This example 'Mechtilde', is likely to have been designed by the artist Frederick Etchells, a member of the group. This simple design was also used for a carpet woven by The Wilton Royal Carpet Factory, near Salisbury, in about 1915.","physicalDescription":"Printed linen furnishing fabric with a design of rows and squares linked by vertical lines, half printed with red and blue blocks of colour.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Frederick Etchells","id":"A11777"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Fry, Roger Eliot","id":"A1427"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Omega Workshops","id":"A7158"},"association":{"text":"designed for","id":"x41471"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Besselievre","id":"A13608"},"association":{"text":"printer","id":"x30811"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen","id":"x29412"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Printed linen","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2010EL5985","2010EL5984"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES307872"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Furnishing fabric","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Maromme","id":"x38559"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1913","earliest":"1913-01-01","latest":"1913-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"CIRC.11-1932","id":"O192363"},"association":"Colourway"},{"object":{"text":"T.241-1931","id":"O192353"},"association":"Colourway"},{"object":{"text":"CIRC.31-1956","id":"O192364"},"association":"Colourway"},{"object":{"text":"CIRC.30-1956","id":"O192368"},"association":"Colourway"},{"object":{"text":"CIRC.29-1956","id":"O192372"},"association":"Colourway"},{"object":{"text":"CIRC.28-1956","id":"O192374"},"association":"Colourway"},{"object":{"text":"MISC.2:41-1934","id":"O92468"},"association":"Colourway"},{"object":{"text":"E.727-1955","id":"O198278"},"association":"Design"}],"creditLine":"Given by Roger Fry","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"80.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"58.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"On the front: 10 twice","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"On the back: Mechtilde 10;/Mechtilde 1 (added later?)","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"(MA/1/F1493, 13/5540 M) A.F.Kendrick minute to director on 4 Dec 1913 notes gift of seven pieces of modern printed fabrics to Museum: 'Seven specimens of \"post-impressionism\" as applied to the printing of linen fabrics were lent by Mr Fry to Mr Lindsay to show at his evening lectures here.
