He became chairman of the Savoy Group in 1903, and after serving in the Royal Navy during the first World War, took over the management of the Opera Company from his stepmother, Helen Lenoir. In 1919 Rupert D'Oyly Carte began revitalising the productions of Gilbert & Sullivan that his father's D'Oyly Carte Company had produced since 1875 when he asked Gilbert and Sullivan to collaborate on creating <i>Trial by Jury</i>,\n\nRupert D'Oyly Carte revitalised the operas, commissioning new productions to bring a new approach to the well-loved works, and in 1929 had the Savoy Theatre rebuilt and remodernised. Several of Carte's London seasons were staged at the Prince's Theatre (now the Shaftesbury) and at Sadler's Wells but he continued the tradition of touring the company throughout the UK and to North America, He died at the Savoy Hotel in September 1948 aged 71.\n","physicalDescription":"Head and shoulders portrait of Rupert D'Oyly Carte (1876-1948). From that job, on the death of Helen D'Oyly Carte in 1913, Stanley Parker was appointed by Rupert D'Oyly Carte to understudy Mr George A Richardson who managed the  theatre from November 1911 to February 1915.\r\n\r\nIn 1913 Stanley Parker became Rupert and (later) Bridget D'Oyly Carte's private secretary, and secretary of the Savoy Theatre Ltd., and the Opera Company.
