Pen and ink by Alexander Stuart Boyd (1854-1930).\n\nThe illustrator, cartoonist, journalist and painter Alexander Stuart Boyd (1854-1930), born in Glasgow, began his art training in 1880 at Heatherley’s School, London. His first cartoons were published in Glasgow’s <i>Quiz</i> in the early 1880s. He moved to London in 1891 and he started to contribute cartoons and illustrations to <i>The Graphic</i> (from 1893), <i>Punch</i> (from 1894),<i> Good Words, Black &amp; White, The Idler, Sunday Magazine, The Pall Mall Gazette</i> and others.In 1894, he did 7 illustrations for Arthur Conan Doyle's short story <i>The Doctors of Hoyland.</i> He emigrated in New Zealand in 1912 where he became President of the Auckland Society of Artists.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Pen and ink illustration for publication showing principal members of the cast of The Gondoliers at the Savoy Theatre, 22nd January 1907.
