Here, Watts aims above all at tranquillity.  He based his methods of working on those of Constable, evidenced in this painting by the fresh colours and sparkling light.  Watts's favourite location for painting was the countryside around the river Wye from central Wales to the estuary of the river Severn, with its gently rolling hills and lush foliage. Also like Constable, Watts preferred the landscape in high summer, the sun at its most powerful and the sky at its brightest.  The scene is populated: a mother and child stroll along the river path, birds soar in the sky, cows graze by the water's edge, and the boats slowly drift along, hardly disturbing the mirror reflections on the water's surface.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Watts, Frederick Waters","id":"A2447"},"association":{"text":"painter (artist)","id":"AAT25136"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oil paint","id":"AAT15050"},{"text":"canvas","id":"AAT14078"}],"techniques":[{"text":"oil painting","id":"AAT178684"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"oil on canvas","categories":[{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[{"text":"British School","id":"x30967"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AR0366","2017KA0927"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"B","id":"THES304874"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"oil paintings","id":"AAT33799"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"River Wye","id":"x31214"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1830s","earliest":"1830-01-01","latest":"1839-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"85.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"estimate","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"118.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"estimate","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"99.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"132.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"","value":"","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Measurement taken at time of assessment prior to BH decant - Frame Dimensions (mm): H- 995 W-1325 D-47;\nPainting Dimensions (mm): not measured"}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from <i>Catalogue of British Oil Paintings 1820-1860</i>, Ronald Parkinson, Victoria and Albert Museum, London: HMSO, 1990 (measurements without frame)","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased, 1866\r\n\r\nWatts exhibited 'Scene on the Wye' as no. 3 at the Liverpool Academy in 1831, and a painting with the same title as no. 325 in 1836.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Oil on canvas, 'On the Wye', Frederick Waters Watts (British, 1800-1862), 1830s","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<i>Catalogue of British Oil Paintings 1820-1860</i>, Ronald Parkinson, Victoria and Albert Museum, London: HMSO, 1990, p. 296"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"Boats","id":"AAT178749"},{"text":"Landscape","id":"x31100"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["262-1866"],"accessionNumberNum":"262","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1866,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-19","recordCreationDate":"1999-12-15","availableToBook":true}}
