The obverse of this medal represents a bust of Alfonso I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, with legend. The reverse shows Lucrezia Borgia, his Duchess. The House of Este were rulers of Ferrara (1240–1597), and Modena and Reggio (1288–1796). Alfonso d’Este (1486-1534) was the 3rd Duke of Ferrara and he got married to Lucrezia Borgia (1480-1519) in 1502. He was the son of Ercole I d'Este and Eleanor of Naples.\nLucrezia Borgia (1480-1520) was the daughter of Pope Alexander VI and Vannozza dei Cattanei. Her brothers included Cesare Borgia, Giovanni Borgia, and Gioffre Borgia. Her father and brothers arranged several marriages. She was married to Giovanni Sforza (Lord of Pesaro), Alfonso of Aragon (Duke of Bisceglie), and the subejct of this medal, Alfonso I d'Este.
