She became successor ballerina to Adeline Genée and remained involved with the Empire until 1913, choreographing as well as dancing. Kyasht had been born and trained in St Petersburg, graduating into the Imperial Ballet in 1902. She was drawn to dance in the West by the high fees being paid and made England her home. She choreographed and danced at the London Coliseum during World War I and would periodically dance with Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, often filling in for other ballerinas who were unavailable. She continued to dance throughout the 1920s and then began teaching, establishing a touring company of young dancers.\r\n\nIn The Dancing Master Lydia Kyasht starred as Mimi, the debutant who takes over the leading role in a mid-19th century ballet. It was choreographed by Fred Farren after an earlier ballet, The Debutante (1906) by Katti Lanner. The revised version with music by Cuthbert Clarke was first performed in 25 July 1910. The photograph shows Kyasht in her costume for the first scene when Mimi arrives at the opera house. The Dancing Master/The Debutante has a complex history, being revived and reworked by a number of ballet masters. The V&A holds a later version of Mimi's costume, made for Phyllis Bedells.","physicalDescription":"Three-quarter length photograph of a dancer in a dress, shawl and bonnet of the mid 19th century, the image on a mount printed with the photographer's details and signed by the subject.
