Initially applied with derogatory overtones, this term became widely used for sculptors - of whom Barye was first and foremost - who specialised in this genre. He was referred to as the 'Michelangelo of the Menagerie' by the contemporaneous art critic Théophile Gautier. This statue was exhibited at the Paris Exhibition of 1855.\r\n\r\nBarye studied animals closely. He attended dissections of animals at the Museum of Natural History in Paris, where he served as the Master of Zoological Drawing from 1854 until his death. But he was also intensely interested in what lay underneath the physical appearance of animals - their inner vitality - and in this sense was in tune with his romantic contemporaries, for whom exotic or wild beasts held a particular fascination. \r\n\r\nAlthough he obtained public commissions and enjoyed the patronage of the Dukes of Orleans, Luynes, Montpensier, and Nemours, Barye specialised in the relatively large-scale production small-scale animal sculptures. The expanding commercial market of the middle class helped ensure that his and other animalier sculptures gained in popularity through the latter half of the 19th century.","physicalDescription":"Statuette, Rearing Bull, bronze","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bayre, Antoine-Louis","id":"A7359"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"First edition ca. 1845"},{"name":{"text":"Ferdinand Barbedienne","id":"A3528"},"association":{"text":"cast","id":"x41023"},"note":"ca.1880-1882"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Bronze","id":"THES49033"},{"text":"Animals and Wildlife","id":"THES250852"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2015HX8574","2015HX8575","2015HY1339","2015HY1340","2015HY1981","2015HY2053","2015HY2098","2016JA4691","2016JA4692","2016JA2250","2015HX3639"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES344572"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statuette","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1880-1882","earliest":"1875-01-01","latest":"1884-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"First edition ca. 1845"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased from the Barbedienne Foundry in 1890 for the V&A’s Circulation Department","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"10.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"26","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"21","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions were taken by SCP on 05.11.14 for <b>Bronze Zoo: A Sculptural Menagerie</b>","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signed BARYE with rectangular gilt initials FB cast through from the model (this is the earliest foundry mark used by Barbedienne)","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Purchased from the Barbedienne Foundry in 1882 for the V&A’s Circulation Department.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Rearing Bull, Antoine-Louis Barye (1796-1875), France (Paris), from the Paris Exhibition 1855, first edition ca.1845, this cast ca.1880-1882","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Poletti, M, Richarme, A.
