Not enough survives for us to understand its original context but it is likely to have formed part of cartouche with an inscription in an armorial display. \r\n\r\nThe fragment was painted with only a simple brown/black pigment. This type of simple painting is known as 'grisaille'.\r\n\r\nThe Netherlands glass workshops produced a large amount of painted glass. Many of these were commissions from civic, mercantile and church officials within the Netherlands but also from abroad.","physicalDescription":"Fragment of clear glass painted in a brown/black pigment with a lion or leopard's head and the remains of some text","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stained glass: Glass painted with a pigment","categories":[{"text":"Stained Glass","id":"THES48891"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AJ7457","2006AJ7867"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"018","id":"THES316709"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Fragment, stained glass","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Netherlands","id":"x29020"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1650 to ca. 1699","earliest":"1645-01-01","latest":"1703-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Mr. Walter Guthrie","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"58.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"41.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"unframed composite panel"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"From the stained glass collection of Walter Guthrie.
