Changes in the design of watches made the movements redundant, but beautifully enamelled watchcases proved useful to box makers for re-use. Here the boxmaker has taken the earlier watchcase and added a lid, rims, and two enamel portraits painted by Zincke, who dominated the enamel portrait market in London from the early 18th century. The portrait of a woman resembles a portrait of Frances, Lady Carteret by Abraham Seaman (active 1724-53).\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde amassed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"A circular-shaped, gold-mounted snuffbox, the base formed from a watchcase, painted on the outside with a profusion of flowers and on the interior with shepherds in a landscape, mounted in gold ropework, with a rim of flowers enamelled in colours on a matted ground. The cover is set on the outside and inside with bust-length portraits of, respectively, a lady and a gentleman, both facing slightly to the left, she in a white dress with a pink shawl, he in a grey wig, brown coat with gold embroidery, white cravat, and pink waistcoat. The rim of the outside cover is enamelled with flowers on a matted ground.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Vauquer, Robert","id":"A9847"},"association":{"text":"enamel painter","id":"x30573"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Zincke, Christian Friedrich","id":"A9842"},"association":{"text":"enamel painter","id":"x30573"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"}],"techniques":[{"text":"enamelling","id":"AAT53773"},{"text":"tooled","id":"AAT53876"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold-mounted painted enamel snuffbox","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"},{"text":"Secrets of the Museum","id":"THES290200"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2009CC8096","2009CP2606","2009CP2597","2009CP2592","2009CP2591","2009CP2590","2009CP2587","2009CP2586","2009CP2585","2009CC8103","2019LM8454","2019LM8458","2019LM8459","2019MB4707"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES412917"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"snuffbox","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Blois","id":"x35110"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1660-1735","earliest":"1660-01-01","latest":"1735-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"5.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"5.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"3.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Published dimensions","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'R.V.P.' painted on interior of watch case","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Belarte\r\n\r\nThe R.V.P. painted in the watch case stands for Robert Vauquer pinxit. Robert Vaquer, born in Blois on April 30, 1625 and died 1670, studied painting in enamel under Jean Toutin and served as goldsmith to Gaston d’Orléans.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"composite snuffbox with earlier elements: the gold and enamel lid with two enamel portraists by Chirstian Friedrich Zincke, circa 1735, the base formed from a watchcase made by Robert Vauquer, Blois, ca. 1660","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Truman, Charles. The Gilbert collection of gold boxes, Vol. I.
