The hieroglyphic text is a standard funerary hymn, blessing the deceased in their journey through their afterlife. The Chinese inscription on the left and right borders is written by Duanfang (1861-1911), a well-known Chinese collector and Manchu politician during the late Qing period. Dunafang's inscriptions suggest that he was the owner of the rubbing, and in 1907 he presented it as a gift to a certain Mr. An. Two more rubbings of the same text are known to exist. Comparing with them, one can be confident that the present rubbing is taken from the original stone, while the other two are probably from a replica of the original. The ultimate significance of the rubbing is that it tells a fascinating story of the reception of ancient Egypt in the early 20th-century China. \r\n\n","physicalDescription":"Ink rubbing of hieroglyphics from the lid of Esnehemaoui's sarcophagus in ancient Egypt, hanging scroll","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"ink on paper","categories":[],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2021NA4240","2021NA4241","2021NA4242"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES396498"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"rubbing","id":"AAT178924"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Richard Harris in Memory of Simon Digby","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"1640","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"01/07/2021","earliest":"2021-07-01","latest":"2021-07-01"},"part":"whole","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"375","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"01/07/2021","earliest":"2021-07-01","latest":"2021-07-01"},"part":"whole","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"1050","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"01/07/2021","earliest":"2021-07-01","latest":"2021-07-01"},"part":"rubbing itself","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"285","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"01/07/2021","earliest":"2021-07-01","latest":"2021-07-01"},"part":"rubbing itself","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This is an ink rubbing featuring three columns of Egyptian hieroglyphics with Chinese inscriptions written by Duanfang (1861-1911) on the left and right border.
