Binns drew in the early 20th century of performers including Henry Irving, Dan Leno, George Robey and Albert Chevalier. As well as theatrical subjects, Binns drew cartoons of political figures, and was associated with two predominant caricaturists of this period, Sir Francis Carruthers Gould and Harry Furniss.\r\n\r\nThis depicts Henry Irving (1838-1905), the actor-manager of the Lyceum theatre and the first actor to receive a Knighthood. He is shown with a paper marked Actors Benevolent fund because Irving invited Charles Wyndham, J. L. Toole and Squire Bancroft, together with other prominent members of the theatrical profession, to dine with him one evening in 1882 in the Beefsteak Room at the Lyceum Theatre, and it was on their collective initiative that a decision was made to found the Actors’ Benevolent Fund. The first committee meeting of the charity took place on the 4th May 1882. To raise money, special all-star matinees were staged, with Irving and Ellen Terry often appearing in scenes from their theatrical successes. The first of these matinees was given at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in 1883.","physicalDescription":"Pen and ink and watercolour cartoon showing Henry Irving in day dress with a monocle in his right eye, standing, looking to his right, his left hand on his hip, holding a shweet in his right hand inscribed in uppercase lettering 'Actors Benevolent Fund Balance Sheet'.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Binns, L.J.","id":"A18609"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pen and ink and watercolour","id":"x32505"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Drawn","id":"x30545"},{"text":"Painted","id":"x30769"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pen and ink and watercolour on paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2014GX2931"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES356678"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawings","id":"AAT33973"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c.1900","earliest":"1895-01-01","latest":"1904-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"S.73-1987","id":"O131320"},"association":"Object"},{"object":{"text":"S.74-1987","id":"O163951"},"association":"Object"},{"object":{"text":"S.72-2008","id":"O147026"},"association":"Object"},{"object":{"text":"S.73-2008","id":"O147027"},"association":"Object"}],"creditLine":"Gabrielle Enthoven Collection","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"17.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"12.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"L.J.
