The factory began to produce stonewares in the early 20th century under technical manager Patrick Nordström. Axel Salto joined Royal Copenhagen in 1933. He remained there for the rest of his career, developing a reputation as one of the factory’s most skilled stoneware modellers.\r\n\r\nThe rich glaze on this piece was developed in the 1930s under the direction of Royal Copenhagen’s chemical engineer Hans A. Madslund. Named ‘Solfatara’ for the metallic oxide it contains, firing under special conditions will turn the glaze bright yellow or black, and can produce mottled variations in between.","physicalDescription":"Stoneware vase with deeply modelled decoration and green/yellow 'Solfatara' glazes.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Salto, Axel","id":"A20418"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Royal Copenhagen","id":"A3549"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"stoneware","id":"x30197"},{"text":"glaze","id":"AAT15091"}],"techniques":[{"text":"modelled","id":"x30779"},{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stoneware with modelled decoration and 'Solfatara' glaze","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Stoneware","id":"THES48890"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2008BV1183"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"140 (VA)","id":"THES49871"},"free":"","case":"7","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Copenhagen","id":"x32462"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1957","earliest":"1957-01-01","latest":"1957-12-31"},"association":{"text":"modelled","id":"x30779"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"13","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'ROYAL COPENHAGEN DENMARK' and a crown","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Printed in green"},{"content":"'SALTO'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Incised"},{"content":"'21441' and three wavy lines","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Painted in blue"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Vase, stoneware with 'Solfatara glaze', designed by Axel Salto, manufactured by Royal Copenhagen, Denmark, 1957.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Opie, Jennifer Hawkins. <u>Scandinavia: ceramics & glass in the twentieth century</u>.
