While other monuments in this display were paid for by towns or churches, this was probably a private commission. Artists at this period travelled widely, and this sculptor also worked in Spain.\r\n\r\nThe relief is the work of Lupo di Francesco, a Pisan sculptor who was probably also responsible for the carvings on the pulpit in the church of San Michele in Borgo, and from 1315 was the head of the workshop at Pisa Cathedral.
