It included Mikhail Fokine’s Aztec-inspired ballet Thunderbird which was said to be an Americanised version of his famous creation The Firebird. Vera Fokina, Mikhail’s wife headed the cast as Princess Nahau in a silver costume with ostrich feathers designed by Hungarian-born Willy Pogány. She was also responsible for the libretto while Fokine also danced as Atzlan. The New York Tribune 05/09/1921 noted that ‘Fokine has done a gorgeous piece of choreography, and Mr. Pogany has given it setting and costumes that surpass anything he has heretofore done, not even his Coq d'Or. The story of the princess released by love from the power of a wizard and her union with her warrior lover is beautifully told.’ \r\nThunderbird was performed to a melange of music by Russian composers; Balakirev, Borodin, Glinka, Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky. From 1918 The Fokines were largely based in New York, teaching and performing in commercial theatre although in the 1930s Fokine again choreographed in Europe and created ballets for the de Basil and Blum Ballets Russes companies. \r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Studio photograph of a dancer en pointe in an elaborate jewelled and feathered costume and headdress, posing looking forward and her arms bent and her hands held in front of her chest.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Muray, Nickolas","id":"AUTH341878"},"association":{"text":"photographers","id":"AAT25687"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"photographic paper","id":"AAT14190"}],"techniques":[{"text":"photography","id":"AAT54225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Photograph, possibly bromide","categories":[{"text":"Dance","id":"THES252984"},{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2025PH7708","2025PH7709","2021MY2316"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SHLN","id":"THES49063"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photographs","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"New York","id":"x29030"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1921","earliest":"1921-01-01","latest":"1921-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"London Archives of the Dance","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"25.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"06/06/2025","earliest":"2025-06-06","latest":"2025-06-06"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"20.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"titled, copyright stamp","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"pencil, ink, verso"},{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Acquired with the London Archives of the Dance","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Photograph by Nickolas Muray of Vera Fokina in Thunderbird at the Hippodrome, New York, 1921","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"ballet","id":"AAT54145"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.482-2021"],"accessionNumberNum":"482","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":2021,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-07-28","recordCreationDate":"2021-05-22","availableToBook":false}}
