It included Mikhail Fokine’s Aztec-inspired ballet Thunderbird which was said to be an Americanised version of his famous creation The Firebird (1910) Vera Fokina, Mikhail’s wife headed the cast as Princess Nahau in a silver costume with ostrich feathers designed by Hungarian-born Willy Pogány. She was responsible for the libretto and Fokine also danced as Atzlan. The New York Tribune 05/09/1921 noted that ‘Fokine has done a gorgeous piece of choreography, and Mr. Pogany has given it setting and costumes that surpass anything he has heretofore done, not even his Coq d'Or. The story of the princess released by love from the power of a wizard and her union with her warrior lover is beautifully told.’ \r\n\r\nThe Thunderbird was performed to a melange of music by Russian composers; Balakirev, Borodin, Glinka, Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky. From 1918 The Fokines were largely based in New York, teaching and performing in commercial theatre although in the 1930s Fokine again choreographed in Europe and created ballets for the de Basil and Blum Ballets Russes companies.
