Elements of the choreography were classicised as the photograph shows Pavlova en pointe. The <i>Mexican Dances</i> were described as ‘genuine novelties, trifles to be sure, but such trifles, filled to running over with the liveliest and quaintest of humour, delightfully executed. Pavlova, as a market woman in pigtails, pink shawl and red and gold hoops, never was more charming than in the second dance ‘Jarabe Tapatia', frolicking about on the brim of a huge Mexican hat.’\n\r\nThe <i>Observer</i>, 20 June 1920, noted that these dances were a surprise as ‘they are so unlike what [Pavlova] has hitherto done, and it is startling to hear her feet making a noise on the stage just like the feet of common women. But whatever she does, whether she clothes herself like a Mexican cowboy or puts on the conventional dress of a ballet-dancer, she is altogether adorable.\n\n<i>Mexican Dances</i> was created in response to Anna Pavlova's visit to Mexico City in 1919 where it was first danced. It seems to have consisted of three traditional dances to traditional-style music - Danza Texana, a Jarabe Tapatia and a Diana Mexicana. The music was by Manuel Castro Padilla and the scenery and costumes by Adolfo Best-Maugaro.
