It is found frequently in the decoration of Gonzaga palaces, for example at Palazzo Te in Mantua.\r\nThe scene represented on the plate is the Rape of Helen and is adapted from a composition known to us from a print by Enea Vico dated 1542. Given that Nicola and the Duke Federigo had died before this date, the artist must have worked from an earlier, now lost, version.\r\nA second plate, probably from the same set and also painted by Nicola, survives in the Museum Correr in Venice.","physicalDescription":"Dish depicting the Rape of Helen.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Nicola da Urbino","id":"A17021"},"association":{"text":"painter (artist)","id":"AAT25136"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"},{"text":"tin glaze","id":"AAT233436"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Tin-glazed earthenware painted with colours","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Maiolica","id":"THES49023"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2008BT0060","2007BM9409","2017JX4178","2018KY8351"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"28","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Urbino","id":"x33375"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1535-38","earliest":"1535-01-01","latest":"1538-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Nicola died in 1538.
