According to Ovid's Metamorphoses (Book X) Cinyras was a king of Panchaia and the father of Myrrha. When Cinyras discovered that he had unwittingly impregnated Myrrha, he attempted to kill his daughter, but the gods turned Myrrha into a tree (the myrrh), from which sprang the child Adonis.\r\n\r\nThe great majority of the images represented on Renaissance maiolica were from classical mythology; Ovid was a major source of inspiration. Maiolica painters would either directly copy images from illustrated editions of the book (for example from the edition published in Venice in 1497) or create their own compositions, sometimes adapting single figures taken from different engravings. In this case all the figures are taken from well known engravings by Marcantonio Raimondi after Raphael.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Della Rovere painter","id":"A20499"},"association":{"text":"painter (artist)","id":"AAT25136"},"note":"probably"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"},{"text":"tin glaze","id":"AAT233436"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Tin-glazed earthenware","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Maiolica","id":"THES49023"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2009CB7283","2017JW1648"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"64 (VA)","id":"THES49735"},"free":"","case":"5","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Urbino","id":"x33375"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1540","earliest":"1535-01-01","latest":"1544-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by George Salting, Esq.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"27.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"6.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured for the Medieval and Renaissance Galleries","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dish on low foot depicing Cinyras and Myrrha, probably painted by the \"Della Rovere\" painter, Urbino, about 1540, tin-glazed earthenware","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Rackham, Bernard. <u>Catalogue of Italian maiolica</u>.
