Made in the mid-19th century, at a time when cheap, press-moulded glass was beginning to become the most available type, a hand-made but undecorated artefact such as this was still extremely marketable.

Materials & Making
This jug is made in strong, brilliantly-clear lead glass. The bowl was blown and, while still on the blowing-pipe, the handle and spout were applied. The handle is part-formed as a gather of molten glass, which is allowed to lengthen by means of gravity and then attached at top and bottom to the body of the jug. The spout is a gather of molten glass applied to the rim and then pulled, with the rim and side of the bowl outwards to form a spout. This modest took probably required at least two people to make.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Glass","categories":[{"text":"British Galleries","id":"THES48985"},{"text":"Glass","id":"THES48946"}],"styles":[{"text":"VICTORIAN","id":"x29321"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AM8666"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"122G (VA)","id":"THES49219"},"free":"","case":"CA2","shelf":"","box":"25"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jug","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1850","earliest":"1845-01-01","latest":"1854-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"8.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"14.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"11.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions checked: Measured; 07/07/1999 by Terry","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Made in England","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Milk jug, Britain, 1845-1852","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["62-1852"],"accessionNumberNum":"62","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1852,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"Glass gallery number","id":"THES50491"},"number":"1126"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LP5769","2019LT8764"],"recordModificationDate":"2026-03-03","recordCreationDate":"1997-12-13","availableToBook":false}}
