In this brooch, a strong and early example of the style, Donald makes a feature of the hollow tubes in which gold was supplied by bullion dealers at the time. In 1967, four years after this brooch, he made a comparable brooch set with a central aquamarine for HRH Princess Margaret.","physicalDescription":"A pale, pointed crystal of amethyst, set in an irregular hexagonal mount at the centre of a textured, 23-pointed gold star. The star is constructed from hollow rods of gold radiating from the centre, each point sliced diagonally and polished to form a contrast with the granular surface. At the back of the brooch the rods form a pattern of lozenge-shaped openings on the polished concave surface. A single pin runs horizontally.
