Frayer began his career in 1991 as a young freelance photographer covering war in the former Yugoslavia. From 2003 to 2009 he was based in the Middle East, working for the Associated Press, and later in New Delhi. In 2013 he joined Getty Images and is currently based in China. In recent years, Frayer has received numerous prestigious awards including two major awards in the 2016 World Press Photo Contest. In 2017, he was named TIME’s Wire Photographer of The Year for his work documenting the Rohingya, and in 2018 was selected as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Feature Photography for the same series. \r\n\r\nAttacks on the villages of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, and the burning of their homes, led to more than 600,000 refugees fleeing to Bangladesh on foot or by boat, and many died in the attempt. According to UNICEF, more than half of those fleeing were children. In Bangladesh, refugees were housed in existing camps and makeshift settlements. It was largely through the resulting photography that the rest of the world came to learn the true horror of what they fled and how they did so. \r\n\r\nKevin Frayer captured both the scale and intimacy of the situation and says of his work: “To watch hundreds of thousands of people being forced from their homes likely for good was a uniquely sad and exhausting experience. I felt it needed a contribution from as many photographers as possible … It was happening at such a staggering rate; the flow of the boats arriving, the crossings by land, the camps growing – new cities growing overnight. It was tragedy in overload. When you’re witnessing things and you don’t have a feeling for the humanity or the tragedy in your work, the people who are looking at your images will not feel anything.
