He moved to Paris in about 1851 as overseer for the Dumas stove and tile firm and in 1855 opened his own studio and, later his own retail shop, with his brother Xavier. Deck specialised in researching glazes and colours, inspired by Middle-Eastern and Far-Eastern ceramics and this dish is a close copy of Japanese Kutani wares of the 1600s and 1800s. Such wares catered to the growing taste in Europe for 'exotic' interiors. In 1887, only three years before his death, he became Director of the National Manufactory at Sèvres.","physicalDescription":"Plate depicting various flowers, as a spray, on a yellow ground.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Deck, Joseph-Théodore","id":"A2115"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, painted in enamel colours","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Art Pottery","id":"THES49021"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2008BT2563","2008BT0410","2006AN6622"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"14","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Plate","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1878","earliest":"1873-01-01","latest":"1882-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"29.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Th Deck'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Impressed"}],"objectHistory":"Exhibited at the Exposition Universelle, Paris, 1878","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Plate depicting spray of flowers on yellow ground, made by Joseph Théodore Deck, Paris, 1878, painted earthenware","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Aslin, E.A.: <u>French Exhibition Pieces 1844-78</u>; VAM, 1973, pl.30"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"Flowers","id":"x35571"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Plate depicting various flowers, as a spray, on a yellow ground\nMade by Joseph Théodore Deck, Paris, France 1878\nMarks: 'Th Deck', impressed\nEarthenware, painted\n\n698-1878","date":{"text":"16/07/2008","earliest":"2008-07-16","latest":"2008-07-16"}}],"partNumbers":["698-1878"],"accessionNumberNum":"698","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1878,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-12-30","recordCreationDate":"2008-07-16","availableToBook":false}}
