He remained there until October 1633, during which time his portrait was painted by the royal artist, Hashim. The painting is inscribed in Persian ‘likeness of Muhammad Ali Beg, ambassador, the work of Hashim’, possibly by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. It was later mounted on a page with margins decorated with flowering plants and insects for inclusion in an album for the emperor.\r\nA copy of this painting, done in the early 19th century and with a border of verses not included in this original, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (55.121.10.27v).","physicalDescription":"Painting, opaque watercolour on paper, a portrait of Muhammad Ali Beg, Iranian ambassador to the Mughal court, on a green background; the border is decorated with flowers and insects.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hashim","id":"A7476"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"opaque watercolour","id":"x35013"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"paper","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Painted in opaque watercolour and gold on paper","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Bonita Trust Indian Paintings Cataloguing Project","id":"THES263148"}],"styles":[{"text":"Mughal","id":"AAT18939"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2022NF9405","2013GB1082","2006BE7785","2006BC7547","2017KC4248","2017KC4253"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES403708"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"painting","id":"AAT33618"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Mughal Empire","id":"THES262021"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1631","earliest":"1626-01-01","latest":"1635-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"38.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"page","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"26.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"page","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"23.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"picture without borders and rules","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"17","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"picture minus border and rules","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"Persian","medium":"","method":"","position":"located to the left of the figure","script":"","translation":"'likeness of Muhammad 'Ali Beg, ambassador, [the] work of Hashim'","transliteration":"'shabih-i muhammad 'ali beg ilchi, amal-i Hashim'","type":"Maker's identification","note":""}],"objectHistory":"The folio is from a group of paintings acquired at auction in 1925 where they were sold as \"The Minto Album\" and subsequently divided between the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin and the V&A.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Painting, portrait of Muhammad Ali Beg, by Hashim, opaque watercolour on paper, Mughal, ca. 1631","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Swallow, Deborah and John Guy eds. <font u>Arts of India: 1550-1900</font u>. text by Rosemary Crill, John Guy, Veronica Murphy, Susan Stronge and Deborah Swallow.
