It was first staged by the National Theatre Company at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 1964 and transferred to the Old Vic in the autumn of that year. The same production team re-created the staging in New York in 1965. The director was John Dexter and the designer was Michael Annals. Hirschfeld's drawing accurately renders the Inca masks designed by Annals, examples of which are held in the V&A's Theatre and Performance collection.","physicalDescription":"Pen and ink cartoon, showing Christopher Plummer as Pizarro, foreground, running to right, with David Carradine as Atahuallpa, standing behind him with arms raised and outstretched, the two men linked by a rope tied round their left wrists.
