The resin acts as a form of glue, binding the woodchips together to create a porridge-like material that can then be moulded and left to harden. Importantly, the material choice is impossible to ignore. The chair begins a conversation.\n\nThe chair was introduced at the London Design Festival in the exhibition <i>Out of the Woods</i> (V&amp;A, 2018). Marjan van Aubel had just graduated from a Royal College of Arts Master in Design Products, while James Shaw had a year still to complete. The chair was designed in response to a brief to record and measure every scrap of material and production time associated with a design, to test its total cost and relative sustainability, addressing the fact that 50-80% of timber is wasted during normal manufacture. The designers worked with manufacturer Benchmark, in collaboration with the American Hardwood Council.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"van Aubel, Marjan","id":"AUTH385949"},"association":{"text":"Designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Shaw, James","id":"AUTH385950"},"association":{"text":"Designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"white ash","id":"AAT11940"},{"text":"Resin","id":"AAT12882"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wood (oak), wood shavings, bioresin.
