Valencian potters, of both Muslim and Christian origin, produced the most sophisticated ceramics to be found in Europe at that time. They supplied the local elite with luxury ceramics but their products were also exported all over Europe.\r\n\r\nThis large basin is decorated with the arms of Maria of Castile, wife of King Alfonso V of Aragón, one of the most prominent figures of the early Renaissance.\r\nMaria of Castile (1401-1458), daughter of Henry III of Castile and Catherine of Lancaster, married Alfonso V (1396 – 27 June 1458) in Valencia in 1415. Alfonso ‘the Magnanimous’ was the King of Aragon, Valencia, Majorca, Sardinia, Corsica, and Sicily and Count of Barcelona from 1416 and King of Naples (as Alfonso I) from 1442 until his death.\r\nMaria had delicate health, and was said to be unattractive. During Alfonso's wars in Italy, she acted as a regent in Aragon. Alfonso and Maria failed to produce children. She was buried in the convent of the Trinidad in Valencia.","physicalDescription":"Large, deep basin, tin-glazed earthenware with lustre decoration, with arms of María de Castilla, wife of King Alfonso V of Aragón.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"},{"text":"tin glaze","id":"AAT233436"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Tin-glazed earthenware with lustre decoration","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Lustre ware","id":"THES48924"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2009CA1955","2009CA1954","2009CA1953","2009CA1956","2006AN2853","2006AN2852","2017KA4178"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"3","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Basin","id":"AAT45614"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Manises","id":"x35253"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"before 1458","earliest":null,"latest":"1457-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"11.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"50.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought from W.
