During conservation, leading up to the reinstallation of the V&A ceramics galleries in 2010-11, discoloured over-painting was removed on two sides of the jar, revealing the scars of where two original handles had been attached. It became clear that the remains of these handles had been thoroughly ground off and the affected areas had been filled in and painted over to present the jar as complete.
